ADVICE FOR ACUTE BACK PAIN


Low back pain can be very painful, but most pain reduces after a few days and goes within a few weeks. If you have any numbness , pins and needles around your bottom or legs, problems opening your bowels or urinating- seek immediate help.

We have been successfully treating low back pain for over 20 years.

  • Most back pain will go away in a few days, do not worry it happens to most of us at some point.
  • Keep as active as possible, but not so the pain increases. Rest regularly and for short periods.
  • You can take a combination of pain killers such as paracetamol AND an anti-inflamatory drug such as ibuprofen. Check with your Pharmacist/GP though! Do NOT take drugs if you have a stomach condition or allergy to them. Check First!
  • HOT/COLD? If the pain is less than 24 hrs a cold compress may help. More than 24 Hrs the heat is usually the best thing. Muscular pain which is aching in nature is usually relieved by heat. If this makes you worse STOP & seek professional Advice. For a joint (such as the knee) use ice for the first 24-36 hrs to decrease the inflammation, rest and elevate the joint.
  • Stretching can help. Pull your knees to your chest when lying on your back.hold for a count of 10.Stop if it hurts!
  • If you have pain in your leg or numbness seek advice ASAP.
  • If you have numbness in or around your bottom seek advice ASAP.
  • If you have acute pain, are worried or feel unwell Seek advice ASAP.
