Viscosupplementation is a term used to describe the aim of supplements which are to:-

Improve the viscosity (flow) of the lubricating fluid in a joint.
Relieve chronic pain and swelling within the joint.
Increase the cartilage depth on load bearing surfaces.
Help improve arthritis pain control and consumption of pain relieving drugs.

Glucosamine
What is it? This is the building blocks for cartilage (hyaline) which lines all joint surfaces in the body.

What conditions does it benefit? There is evidence that people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) may benefit from taking additional glucosamine supplements in their diets. It has also been suggested that those with musculo-skeletal injuries may benefit from glucosamine supplements to aid tissue healing and growth. Glucosamine combined with chondroitin and other vitamin supplements has also been found to be useful in maintaining joint health. (There is no evidence to suggest that those with autoimmune disorders like lupus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis derive any benefit from it.) Side effects/Things to be aware of Glucosamine is made from shell fish. People with allergies to these can be allergic to this product, veggi versions are available.

Chondroitin
What is it?Chondroitin sulfate forms half of the basic outer coating of musculo-skeletal strrcutures such as cartilage, ligaments and tendons.

What conditions does it benefit?Chondroitin sulfate is used for the prevention and treatment of osteoarthritis. It may be used by itself or in combination with glucosamine. Chondroitin has also been found to be useful in maintaining joint health.Chondroitin sulfate may help maintain and repair the structure and function of cartilage. In addition, it appears to reduce pain and inflammation. Chondroitin is made from the cartilaginous rings of bovine trachea (the windpipe in cattle). Another, rather expensive source is shark cartilage. This means that they are not suitable for vegetarians but most companies now produces vegetairian based chondroitin which is made from corn.

Cod Liver Oil.

What is it?Cod liver oil is a nutritional supplement derived from livers of cod fish. It has high levels of the omega 3 fatty acids and very high levels of vitamin A and D.

What conditions does it benefit?Cod liver oil is widely taken to ease the pain and joint stiffness associated with arthritis and has also been clinically proven to have a positive effect on the heart, bones and the brain. As well as helping to nourish skin, hair, and nails.

Cod liver oil and fish oil are similar, but cod liver oil has much higher levels of vitamins A and D.
